How might disruptions help you to know Jesus?

“I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” Mark 1:24 (NRSV)

Read Mark 1: 21-28.

Jesus begins his ministry by calling disciples to follow him. (Mark 1:16-21) Next, he honors the Sabbath by going to the synagogue to worship and teach. He teaches with authority as one who knows God. One can almost picture listeners scratching their heads and wondering, “Who is this man? How did he get such insights to the scriptures?” There is a slight dig at the scribes because they apparently have taught without authority.

1. What does it mean to teach with authority?

2. How does one get “authority?”

Suddenly, the scene is interrupted. Out of the crowd comes a voice. It is someone who clearly understands the identity of Jesus. The only problem — this man has unclean spirits and speaks in plural. He cries out to Jesus, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” (Mark 1:24 NRSV)

3. How can such a confused person be so clear about Jesus?

4. How can people without unclean spirits be so confused about the identity of Jesus?

Here on his first days of his mission Jesus finds his teaching disrupted and himself in conflict. Jesus is at the synagogue to teach, but instead he is being challenged. What more could go wrong? Or is this an opportunity to put things right, at least with one person?

5. How might this disruption be an opportunity for ministry?

Yet, this man realizes the authority of Jesus far exceeds that of teaching. Jesus’ authority extends to healing and transforming lives. This man realizes Jesus has the ability to change his very life and release him from his disease, but he appears hesitant to be transformed to health.

6. Why might this man be resistant of the healing power of Jesus?

7. Even when change is for the better, what makes change so difficult?

Despite the questions, Jesus heals the man. Mark is quite descriptive of the convulsing and crying out as he is healed. This entire scene, from the teaching of Jesus to his healing, leaves people asking about the identity of Jesus. Who is this man? What is he doing? It appears beyond their grasp.

8. Why do these witnesses have such difficulty believing in Jesus?

9. Who, if anyone, has an open attitude in this passage?

Mark describes how the word spreads about Jesus. People tell others about his teaching and healing. Thus Jesus begins to become famous, but not all who hear about Jesus choose to become disciples and follow him.

What is the central point of this passage?

By the time Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast and moved north, all agreed. Never had the United States seen such a storm. Yet, the full impact from Katrina was yet to come. The breach of the New Orleans levees turned the city into a lake, sending unsuspecting people into a panic as the waters rose in their homes. Some went to their roof to wait for days for rescue. Others left by boat or anything that might float.

In the midst of the chaos, many tried to bring order. Some tried to speak with authority, but their words revealed that they hadn’t a clue how to bring order. Now and then, someone in the crowd would step forward and say something that made sense. Sometimes, it was not a word people wanted to hear,

“Be patient.”

“Night is coming. Everyone get as comfortable as possible. Make the best of it.”

The hurricane was a disruption to the maximum degree. Lives, homes, businesses, and dreams were wiped away. People were ripped raw with anguish. Yet, slowly, healing is coming. The journey to rebuild lives and communities is a long one. Some people have turned to God in new ways. Others continue to seek order in the midst of the chaos. Some may not have the emotional stamina to start again.

1. How might a crisis, small or large, open us to God?

2. Besides living through a disaster or crisis, how else might we develop an attitude of openness?

3. Why is it important for disciples of Christ to have an attitude of openness?

The man in Mark 1 was at a crisis point. If Jesus healed him, his life would change. Sometimes change is difficult even if it is for the better. After the hurricane, hundreds of thousands moved into shelters such as schools, churches, motels, and civic centers. When people got the word that they could leave the temporary shelter, some found it difficult to leave the security of their new home. It is known as “evacuee syndrome.” It might not have been the best of homes, but at least the shelter was a known place of comfort.

The love of Christ brought healing and wholeness to the man with an unclean spirit in Mark 1:23; but radical change is not always readily accepted. The man was unsure about receiving such a gift, and the crowd seemed unsure about the authority of Jesus to do such things. Change can be difficult. Sometimes we can resist the good gifts of God because we are not open.

Read Mark 1:14-20

The Gospel of Mark was written several decades after the death and resurrection of Jesus. For those early Christians, it was not an easy thing to be associated with the teachings or life of Jesus. Christians were persecuted and sometimes killed. To choose to follow Jesus was a critical decision – one that could mean imprisonment or sacrificing your very life.

Mark is the shortest of the four Gospels, noted by a sense of immediacy and urgency. This author seems to have no time for adjectives, adverbs, and extra words. Instead, Mark urges the listener to hear the core message of the gospel of Jesus captured in verse 15, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” (Mark 1:15 NRSV)

1. What do you think Jesus meant by the phrase “good news?”

2. Can you rephrase Mark 1:15 and put in your own words?

In the first chapter of the Gospel, Mark quickly jumps into a description of Jesus calling his first disciples. There is no time for details about Jesus being born in the manger — on to the ministry and mission. Jesus begins by calling people to serve as partners in mission.

First, Jesus passes through the Sea of Galilee and sees fishermen at work. This scene is not of a summer vacation with two men holding a fishing pole for recreation. Instead, brothers Simon and Andrew are casting nets into the sea to catch a quantity of food. It is their livelihood. Jesus interrupts their work with a two-part invitation. These fishermen are invited to follow Jesus and to invite others to follow Jesus. Note how quickly Simon and Andrew respond It is immediate!

3. How do you picture this scene?

4. How might friends have reacted to the response of these fishermen?

5. Can you imagine how Simon and Andrew’s lives might have changed?

Next, Jesus walks further. He sees more fishermen, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. These brothers are mending their nets, probably doing needed work for the family business. Jesus calls them immediately. Their response appears to be immediate as well as they leave their father and the hired workers.

6. What surprises you about this whole passage?

Mark’s description is sparse without digression. The disciples take no time to ponder or procrastinate. Jesus calls and they respond. Even if these fishermen knew Jesus from earlier experiences and anticipated his calling of them to serve, it is still very impressive. It is a call to follow and also a call to invite others to learn about Jesus.

Which is harder: to follow or to invite others to follow?

When we were children many of us played the game “Simon says.” The leader would give a command, and if it began with the word “Simon,” then all were to promptly follow the directions. Otherwise, each person was to remain frozen. The leader would try to trick others into moving without the key word “Simon” being uttered. It was a fun game and taught listening skills.

As we got older and entered school, listening to directions became an important tool in getting through school. Teachers expected attentiveness and follow-through.

Following directions may or may not be your forte. Perhaps you like to give the directions with others following you. Or, maybe you have an ornery, independent streak. Or, maybe you thrive in creative settings where you do not fit in any box. That’s reality for many people.

4. What criteria do you use when you decide to follow someone?

5. How easy is it for you to follow Jesus?

Each of us is created with a big “ME” burning deep in our spirit. Some call it sin, spelled with a capital “I”. Unfortunately, that “I” can take over our lives, leaving no room to follow Christ. Thus, we daily are called to confess and ask for guidance.

Imagine Jesus finding you on this Tuesday at 10:35 a.m. Imagine Jesus saying to you the same words as he said to the fishermen, “Follow me.”

6. Where will you probably be on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.?

7. What would it mean to leave what you are doing to follow Christ?

8. How is that similar or different than the response of the first disciples?

Jesus adds another level. Not only are we to follow Jesus, but we are to invite others to follow him. Sometimes we invite by allowing people to see how we live, observe our choices, and note our values. Hopefully, our lives become a witness to the incredible love of Christ. Other times, we overtly ask people to learn about Christ and to follow him. We turn from an inward posture to looking at the needs beyond ourselves . . . the need for Christ.

9. Jesus talked in terms of “fishing for people.” How might you invite others to follow Christ?

“[Jesus] found Philip and said to him ‘Follow me.’” John 1:43 (NRSV)

Read John 1:43-51

It is clear from this passage Jesus is not going to wait for people to find him and discover his message. In this situation, Jesus decides to go to Galilee and find Philip. It is unknown if Jesus already knew Philip. Perhaps, Jesus went looking for him on the recommendation of Andrew and Peter. They were all from the same home town. It is possible there was no previous connection. The key aspect of the story is one of invitation.

When Jesus finds Philip, he simply invites him by saying, “Follow me.” (John 1:43 NSRV) There is no mandate. There is no theological discourse. It is a simple invitation: “Follow me.”

1. What can you say about Jesus from this one verse, John 1:43?

If Philip responded verbally to Jesus’ invitation to follow him, it is not recorded in the Gospel. Yet, it must have been a resounding “yes,” because Philip leaves Jesus to find another seeker, Nathanael. Jesus’ actions have sparked a chain reaction. Jesus invites Philip only to have Philip invite Nathanael. Today, this might be called relational evangelism. The good news of Jesus is shared from one person to another.

2. What might have motivated Philip to leave Jesus to seek out Nathanael?

3. What does Philip tell Nathanael about Jesus?

Philip and Nathanael are educated men who are well-versed in the law and prophets. Both know of the promise of the Messiah; both anticipate one sent by God. Yet, Nathanael is doubtful when Philip announces he has found the one whom they have been seeking. Nathanael points out the obvious. What good ever came from Nazareth, a town not known for much of anything?

Philip’s invitation to Nathanael is a simple one: “Come and see.” (John 1:46 NRSV) No need to debate it. Come and see. Yet before Nathanael can respond, Jesus finds him. Jesus knows him, but how? Nathanael is baffled. Jesus answers, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” (John 1:48 NRSV)

Jesus’ answer can easily baffle us. Was the fig tree isolated, making it impossible for anyone to know he was there? Some believe the fig tree is symbolic for studying the scriptures. Perhaps Nathanael had studied the scriptures in secret with Philip. (Some scholars surmise Nathanael is actually either Bartholomew or Matthew.) Nevertheless, something clicked for Nathanael. He was convinced and proclaimed Jesus as Rabbi, Son of God and King of Israel.

4. How would you describe Nathanael?

Jesus promises Nathanael will see far greater things. Again, it is not clear what all Jesus is describing. Perhaps, this is a reference to the resurrection or the end of time. As the rabbi, Jesus reminds Nathanael his learning is not over, but extends an invitation to continue to learn and grow.

5. What do you think is the main point of the Philip and Nathanael story?

Aaron came running into the kitchen, “Mom, come and see!” Aaron’s mother immediately dropped what she was doing to witness Joey’s latest discovery in his backyard safari.

Monique rushed back on the trail to her waiting father, “Dad, the waterfall is amazing. Come and see!” Her dad breathed deeply and chuckled, “Give me a minute. Let me catch my breath. I’m not as young as I used to be.” Monique sat beside her father and waited patiently. Finally, he took her by the hand and nodded. She danced with joy and shouted, “Yes! Come and see!”

From childhood days, we have invited others to celebrate the discoveries of life. Come and see! Come and enjoy!

1. Can you think of a time when you invited someone to “Come and see!”?

2. What kind of response did you get?

It’s just that simple. In our story, Jesus invites Philip. Then, Philip invites Nathanael. Each invites because there is a deep desire to share good news with others. In this case, the good news is Jesus Christ himself. This is the one whom Philip and Nathanael have been waiting for since they began studying and understanding the scriptures.

3. Take a moment and reflect on your own life. Who invited you to come and see this one named Jesus?

4. What role has the church had in that invitation to grow in the love of Christ?

5. How is that invitation still changing your life?

In this passage there are several invitations. Jesus invites Philip to follow him. Philip responds favorably and extends an invitation to Nathanael. But Philip’s invitation is met with doubt and suspicion. Nathanael is hesitant to respond to the invitation to come and see Jesus, so Jesus goes to Nathanael.

6. In your opinion, what makes someone hesitant to respond to an invitation to come, see, or follow Jesus?

7. If someone would come and see your congregation, what would they find?

As disciples of Jesus, we are called to have an attitude of inviting others to “come and see” just as we have received the invitation.

How does baptism connect disciples with God and other disciples?

Read Mark 1:4-11

From birth, John the Baptist and Jesus were connected through the friendship of their mothers. Mary went to Elizabeth as soon as Mary found out she was pregnant. Pregnant Elizabeth proclaimed to pregnant Mary, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb . . . For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy” (Luke 1:41-44 NRSV). Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months of her pregnancy.

No doubt, John and Jesus knew each other well through their shared family connection, but they also knew a shared dedication to serving God. Despite the crowds from the Judean countryside and Jerusalem who clearly came to see John, he did not preach about himself. Instead, he pointed to Christ. Through baptism, God launched Jesus into public ministry and mission.

1. Why is the connection between John and Jesus important?

2. What can we learn from that connection?

John prepared the people for Jesus through a baptism of repentance. The baptism he taught and did was with water alone; it was a ritual cleansing. Jesus will do something new in baptism, connecting the baptized with the Holy Spirit.

3. How are the baptisms proclaimed by Jesus and John different?

When Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened, the Spirit descended, and a voice from heaven was heard. “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased” (vs. 11). In the baptism of Jesus, there is a unique connection between God and Jesus as a parent to a child. When we look at Jesus, we see God.

4. Why did Jesus need to be baptized?

5. How do you explain the connection between God and Jesus?

At Jesus’ baptism, there was also a public connection between Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The form of a dove was a visible endorsement of the Holy Spirit’s presence. God’s voice added to the weight of the moment. Jesus was the “real deal” – God’s only beloved Son in whom God was well-pleased. In addition to being a public endorsement, this was a very intimate moment between parent and child. The key word is “Beloved.”

6. How does it feel to be called “beloved,” especially by God?

God as parent, child, and spirit were connected in a single unit in the baptism of Jesus, giving Jesus a clear mission. From this baptism, Jesus went into action, inviting others to connect with his mission and to follow him. In following Christ, people connect with God and the Holy Spirit in new ways, receiving God’s promise of salvation.

At the ELCA National Youth Gathering some years ago, a long-distance race was scheduled. The finish line was established inside the convention hall where at least 30,000 youth had gathered. Each synod designated one person to run the race.

The crowd of thousands applauded at the first sight of each runner entering the building. Eventually, the announcer proclaimed the final runner was within sight. The crowd geared up to see the last place runner. Poor runner. Would he or she be embarrassed to finish in last place?

But instead of a lone final runner, a small group of runners came into the convention center holding hands. When the crowd saw the final group of runners, everyone knew what had happened. The runners did not want one of their fellow competitors to face the crowd alone in last place; instead, a few of the participants had waited outside the convention door for the final runner. There was no last place finisher. The crowd erupted into thunderous approval. The crowd was connected as a single unit.

After the race was over, a giant cross of white fabric was lifted high, flapping as it ascended. Each of us in the convention center was reminded of our baptism. We are not alone, but are connected with Christ and with one another

We long for connections. We long to belong. In baptism, we are connected with God. We are named and claimed as God’s beloved.

What does it mean for you to be baptized?

In baptism, we also become connected with others who are baptized, including the whole of the Church. Our baptized brothers and sisters come in all shapes and sizes, speaking many languages. We might not always agree with our brothers and sisters, but we are connected through Jesus Christ.

Can you think of any examples of when your connection with other baptized disciples has caused you discomfort?
How has knowing you are connected with other baptized disciples helped you in life?

We know only too well our need to be connected to God and to one another. It is far too easy to go astray, connecting with the latest fads and discarding Christ. Daily we pray for the Spirit to keep us connected with Christ and to other disciples of Christ.

What might you do this week to keep you connected with Christ?

Gracious God, send your Holy Spirit and connect me with Christ, so I might bring you joy.

How does being a disciple bring peace?

“Now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word.”

Luke 2:29 (NRSV)

Read Luke 2:22-40

The context for this reading from Luke’s Gospel is the Temple in Jerusalem. Mary and Joseph are upholding the religious laws by observing the ritual act of purification after the birth of a child (See Leviticus 12), and the required consecration of the first-born son to the Lord (Exodus 13:2). They travel to Jerusalem in obedience to the law of Moses. By their actions, it is clear that Mary and Joseph are devout people. It is also clear they are poor; they offer a sacrifice prescribed for those who could not afford to offer a lamb — turtledoves and pigeons. (Luke 2: 24)

It is in this holy place, in the act of holy ritual, that the reader is introduced to Simeon and Anna.

Both are near the end of their earthly life. Both are identified as godly people. Simeon is described as being “righteous and devout” (Luke 2:25 NRSV), and Anna “never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day” (Luke 2:37 NRSV). Both lived a life of expectation. Simeon is “looking forward to the consolation of Israel” (Luke 2:25 NRSV), and Anna speaks about child Jesus as the promised Messiah who will bring the redemption of Jerusalem (Luke 2:38).

What are Simeon and Anna waiting for in their lifetime?
What is it like to have your waiting fulfilled?

The theme of “seeing” permeates the story. As Jesus is brought to the Temple by his parents, both Simeon and Anna recognize Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promises, right before their own eyes. Anna tells of the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem; Simeon proclaims that his eyes have seen God’s salvation – a light for revelation to the whole world.

What does “God’s salvation” mean?

Simeon also “sees” the path of suffering and opposition Jesus will face (Luke 2:34-35). Jesus will be in the Temple again as an adult, challenging the religious leaders. A sacrifice will again be offered – the sacrifice of Jesus’ life.

How might Mary have felt after hearing all of Simeon’s words?

As Simeon realizes the fulfillment of the hoped-for Messiah, his words reflect a sense of completion: “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word” (Luke 2:29 NRSV). Expectation leads to fulfillment, and fulfillment brings peace.

How did Simeon have an attitude of peace?
What brings you peace?

Simeon’s words may sound familiar to you. They are sometimes sung as the canticle following Holy Communion in the liturgy. (See Evangelical Lutheran Worship, Page 113, Hymns 200-203) As disciples in worship receive the very real presence of Christ in the meal, we, along with Simeon, know the fulfillment of God’s promises – personally, intimately, right before our eyes. We can go forth in peace to serve the Lord.

She had served as the organist in the small country church for over half a century. Her father had been one of the early settlers of the community. His skills as a carpenter are still evident in the sturdy beams of the wood-framed church building he helped to shape.

She was a devout woman – faithful in her actions and words. In her later years, her hands – once nimble and sure on the keyboard – were gnarled with arthritis, making it impossible for her to play. Yet even though her hands were stilled, her voice still sang the hymns of faith she had known since childhood.

She spent the last years of her life in a nursing home. Many of those days were spent bed-ridden, waiting. She waited for the promises to come to fulfillment — promises made to her when she was but an infant, promises taught to her in her childhood, promises studied and affirmed as an adult. She waited to be taken home.

When the end finally came, her family and friends gathered in the church she so loved to hear the promises yet again. The same organ she had played for those many decades sang out glorious proclamations of a sure and certain hope, of promises fulfilled. And the same words she so ably assisted the congregation to sing were now offered as a prayer for her: “Lord, now you let your servant go in peace, for your word has been fulfilled.”

Her waiting was over. The promises were fulfilled. God’s faithful servant was at rest. And even though there was grief expressed, somehow all was well. Somehow, there was completion. Somehow, there was peace.

And what of us? And our waiting? Let us join the prayers of the faithful of ages past as we pray, “Lord, now you let your servant go in peace, for your word has been fulfilled.”

What does it mean to trust God as a faithful disciple?

Read Luke 1:26-38

The story of Jesus’ birth begins to be told this Fourth Sunday in Advent. It is a story of an extraordinary visitation of an angel who tells of a miraculous conception, yet it is rooted in an ordinary town (Nazareth) and in a common young girl (Mary) whose simple faith and trust stand throughout the ages as a model of faithful discipleship.

The timing of the angel Gabriel’s visit to Mary (known in the church calendar as the “annunciation” – the “announcement”) is identified within the context of the story of the announcement of the birth of John the Baptist. “In the sixth month” (Luke 1:26 NRSV) refers to the sixth month of Elizabeth’s (Mary’s cousin) pregnancy. It might be helpful to read Luke’s account of the announcement of John’s birth (Luke 1:5-25).

What similarities do you see in the two accounts? What differences?

The angel Gabriel begins with a common word of greeting (translated “greetings” or “hail”), but the remainder of Gabriel’s message is anything but ordinary! Mary is addressed as “favored one,” and when Mary seems perplexed by what the greeting means, the angel assures her, “Don’t be afraid,” and again says to her, “You have found favor with God.” (Luke 1:30 NRSV)

What is the significance for Mary of having found “favor with God?”
What reassurance does this give us when we contemplate what God is calling us to do as disciples?

Gabriel then gets to the heart of his message. Mary will conceive and give birth to a child – no ordinary child, to be sure, but “the Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:32 NRSV). This child is clearly identified as the promised Messiah – the fulfillment of the prophet Isaiah’s prophecy. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

Mary’s initial response is that of puzzlement: “How can this be?” She is but a young girl who has not had sexual relations. The answer: through the power of the Holy Spirit which will “come upon” and “overshadow” her.

The word “overshadow” (Luke 1:35) is the same word used in the Old Testament to describe God’s presence resting on the tabernacle in the pillar of cloud in the Sinai desert (Exodus 40:35). And just as the Spirit moved over the waters of creation, bringing forth life out of nothing, so God’s Spirit will move again to bring about something new.

Mary’s response is one of obedient trust. “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word” (Luke 1:38 NRSV). Her question, “How can this be?” is turned into an affirmation of trust, “Let it be so.” In a few short phrases, the plan of God is revealed. Just as God is able to bring about the birth of John in Elizabeth (who is beyond child-bearing years), God is able to accomplish the virgin birth of Jesus through Mary. “For nothing will be impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37 NRSV)

“Who, me? You’ve got to be kidding!” “Why … We’ve never done it like that before.” “I don’t think I can do that!” “Are you sure you want me?”

Sound familiar? We often speak similar words when presented with an opportunity to stretch, to go beyond our “comfort zones,” to dare to venture out into uncharted territory. Change and challenge are difficult. They bring anxiety and confusion; they can turn our world upside down.

We can identify with Mary’s initial response to the angel’s announcement that she was to give birth to the Christ. Our text tells us she was “much perplexed” and needed time to ponder just what all the commotion was about (Luke 1:29). Her first words were a question: “How can this be?” (Luke 1:34 NRSV)

Recall a time when you were challenged and stretched to do something new. How did you respond?

The angel Gabriel reminded Mary of the power of God’s Holy Spirit – the same power that through God’s word brought life out of nothing in creation, the same power that brought budding life to elderly Elizabeth. With this Spirit, the impossible is possible. And Mary’s words quickly changed from a question, “How can this be?” to an affirmation of willing trust: “Let it be with me according to your word.”

Take a moment and silently meditate on Mary’s prayer. What thoughts come to mind?

As faithful disciples of Christ, we, too, have been called to do new and exciting things. God has blessed us with unique gifts and talents, and God has placed us in opportunities to use and share the gifts. We may wonder at times whether we have the right “stuff” to do what we are called to do. The task often seems impossible. We know ourselves only too well – our weaknesses, our failings, our lack of experience.

Even as we speak our doubts and reservations, we hear the story of two women: Elizabeth, too old to conceive; and Mary, too young. If God’s Spirit was able to move in each of them to do the impossible, who knows what “impossible” ventures God is birthing within you? The angel’s assurance to Mary is also a word of comfort to each of us: “Don’t be afraid, for you have found favor with God. The Holy Spirit will be with you.”

May our response be as Mary’s: “Here I am, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38 NRSV)

Read John 1:6-8, 19-28

Once again we meet John the Baptist, in this instance through the words of the Gospel writer of John. Like the writer of Mark, the writer of John emphasizes John the Baptist’s uniqueness.

Unlike Mark’s description of the Baptizer, the writer of John focuses not on John’s unique attire and diet, but rather on John the Baptist’s unique role in the Good News story of Jesus. John is to expectantly bear witness to Jesus, the light of the world.

Clearly, John had a strong following of disciples. Mark’s Gospel indicates that “people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him” (Mark 1:5 NRSV). He obviously stirred the expectations of the people, so much so that the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” (John 1:19 NRSV)

Even more clear is John the Baptist’s own understanding of his role. He is not the promised, expected Messiah. He is not Elijah, taken up to heaven in a chariot and expected to return to be the forerunner of the Messiah. Nor is he “the prophet” – one like Moses who was expected to fulfill the law, leading, and guiding the people. No, John’s singular role is to testify to the light – to prepare for One who is to come. His message of expectation and witness echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah: “Make straight the way of the Lord.” (John1:23 NRSV; Isaiah 40: 3)

“The light” is rich with symbolism in John’s Gospel. It is God’s creative, life-giving Word, active and present in a dark world. (See John 1:1-5) John the Baptist’s role is to serve as a window to that light, pulling back the curtain so the light could be seen.

Through his call to “make straight the way of the Lord” (John 1:23 NRSV), John the Baptist paves the road for Jesus. He challenges people to clean the film and dust of sin away so the light can be brightly seen.

Note that the One John the Baptist anticipates (and about whom he testifies) is already present and “stands among you.” (John 1:26 NRSV) John’s role is secondary to the one who comes after him. John is not worthy to “untie the thong of his sandal” – a humble act of a servant or slave.

John the Baptist’s witness and expectation comes to fulfillment in Jesus. As the gospel story continues, the next day John sees Jesus coming toward him and he declares, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29 NRSV)

For John and for the disciples of every age, testimony bears fruit. Expectation finds fulfillment.

All in the person of Jesus, the light of the world.

“Expectation.” It’s an interesting word. We speak of a young woman anticipating the birth of a child as “expecting.” We use it to articulate that which we anticipate. Expectations are not “pie-in-the-sky” hopes and dreams with no basis in reality; rather, there is a certain level of confidence that the anticipated hope will reach fulfillment.

What do you expect might happen this week?
How confident are you that your expectations will become reality?

There is a saying often heard from teachers and counselors: the measure of what people will achieve often reflects the expectations others have of them. Expect low results, and the person will live down to them. Expect great things, and the person is challenged to stretch and grow.

What do you expect of a disciple of Christ?
What might God’s expectation be?

John the Baptist had high expectations. He anticipated the coming of the Christ. His life’s mission – his life’s expectation – was that of pointing to the promised Messiah. Time and again, he directed attention away from himself and toward Jesus. Even though others didn’t readily recognize Jesus as the fulfillment of their expectations, he tirelessly said, “Look around. See the Christ who is present, in your midst!”

As disciples of Christ, our life’s expectation – like John the Baptist – is also to point to Jesus. We are called to look with confidence into the future and anticipate the fulfillment of God’s promises. We are called to look with confidence into the present and point out how God is here, active and moving. We are called to look with confidence into the past and bear witness to how God has been at work, even when we failed to see it at the time. Past, present, and future – all full of expectation!

All this looking is directed not to ourselves but to the One who is the true light, Jesus Christ. The gospel writer of John offers a wonderful description of the attitude of a disciple: to be “a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.” (John 1:7-8 NRSV)

“In the beginning.”

For the gospel writer of Mark, the story of the Good News of Jesus Christ begins not with a birth of a child (Luke 2) or a family tree tracing lineage back to a great patriarch. Matthew 1) Nor does it begin with a cosmic connection of Jesus to the very beginning of creation. (John 1)

Mark begins with a clear proclamation – this is a book of good news (Gospel) about Jesus Christ, God’s Son. (Mark 1:1) And the first character encountered is a character indeed – an eccentric man with a rugged wardrobe and a sparse diet quoting the prophets and calling people to repentance – John the Baptist.

If you were to write the story of Jesus, how would you begin?

The passage quoted from Isaiah (verses 2-3) validates and foretells the role of John the Baptist. He is the “voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord.’” (Mark 1:3)

What was the key message of John the Baptist?

His voice proclaims a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (vs. 4). Ritual washing was an important part of Israel’s worship practices. Priests were to wash themselves before coming into the Temple. The act of purification was extended to include the laity. Many religious sects, including the Pharisees and the Essene community living near where John the Baptist preached, emphasized the importance of ritual washing and purification.

What are ways you prepare for worship?
How might the message of John the Baptist be similar or different if he were teaching at your congregation?

The washing (baptism) John proclaims has a specific purpose and mission: to call people to repentance and forgiveness in preparation for One who was to come. The Greek word for repentance literally means to “turn one’s mind.” John called for the re-orientation of life from the old ways of doing things to a new, freed (forgiven) life of anticipation of what is about to come.

The writer of Mark describes in great detail the diet and wardrobe of John the Baptist (vs. 6), thus identifying him as someone “out of the mainstream.” He was also someone very clear about his role: to be a forerunner for One yet to come who is greater than he. (Mark 1:7)

How can someone from the “outside” help us see things in a different light?

Have you ever expected a very important person to come into your home? Perhaps it was an important politician, or the boss or supervisor where you worked, or maybe a religious leader, or an important member of the family.

What do you do to prepare for their arrival? You might bake something special, or mow the lawn (or shovel the sidewalk, depending on where you live). You might choose some special music to be played, or purchase a gift of welcome.

Most importantly, you probably would do some serious cleaning – dusting away the dirt, vacuuming and sweeping the floors, scrubbing away built-up grime and stains in the kitchen and bathroom.

If you were to ask your guests, most would probably say that all the cleaning and preparation really didn’t matter to them. They came to see you and not your house. But the preparation mattered to you.

What are some ways we prepare for important visitors in our home or church?

“Prepare the way of the Lord.” We hear John the Baptist’s voice ringing out, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. John calls for a good cleaning of our spiritual houses – the gossip we repeat, the grudges from the past that gather like dust bunnies in the corners of our lives, our inattention to the poor, our captivity to our culture and its misguided values. We as disciples of Jesus have much to clean to get ready for God’s coming.

Why does “a good cleaning” seem to matter to John the Baptist?

The truth is, we can never on our own get our houses completely in order for God to enter. Left to ourselves, there will always be one more spot we missed, one shelf we failed to dust, one crumb we didn’t (and couldn’t) see. Our repentance is never fully complete.

Are the words “Our repentance is never fully complete” assuring or troubling?

We need the full message of John the Baptist: repentance for the forgiveness of sins. When we have done all we can do to prepare for God to come into our lives, God does one thing more. God washes away what we cannot clean. And God comes, not because our house is in order, but to see us, because God loves us.

The guest becomes the host. The One for whom we prepare and clean, in the end, cleanses us. The One to whom gifts are given becomes the gift. Our “Advent attitude” – our attitude as disciples of Jesus – is one of repentance and thankfulness for God’s forgiving grace.

“Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come.” Mark 13:33 (NRSV)

Read Mark 13:24-37

This chapter of Mark is known as the “Little Apocalypse” – a miniature revelation of the second coming of the Christ. Many of the familiar elements of “the day of the Lord” from the Old Testament are present in these verses:

· Nature will exhibit signs that the end is near (verses 24-25)

· The Son of Man first described in Daniel’s vision (Daniel 7) will come in the clouds (vs. 26)

· The chosen elect will be gathered (vs. 27)

All this will happen “after that suffering” (vs. 24). These words proclaim the promise of God’s deliverance to an infant church undergoing persecution. The reality of suffering will not last forever. The present hurt is endured in the promise of a future hope.

1. What images come to mind when you think of the Second Coming of Christ?

What is the attitude of a faithful disciple to be? The answer: hopeful watching and waiting. Two illustrations from these verses make the point. When a tree buds, it is obvious that summer is coming (vs. 28). In the same way, faithful disciples are called to be hope-filled – to look for signs of God’s presence, even in the midst of suffering. We are to be vigilant, as a brief parable of a servant anticipating the owner’s return (vs. 35-36) reminds us.

4. What other illustrations might Jesus have used to demonstrate his point?

The Greek word used for “watching” is used twice in Mark’s Gospel – here and in the Garden of Gethsemane as Jesus admonishes the disciples to watch (Mark 14:32-39) while he prays. The disciples fall asleep, only to awaken to Jesus’ arrest and coming suffering.

5. What makes it so difficult to watch and wait?

The parable in Mark 13 introduces what is about to happen in the next chapter. The various times mentioned correlate with the events of Jesus’ passion: evening (the last supper); midnight (the garden and arrest of Jesus); cockcrow (Peter’s denial); and in the morning (the trial, and ultimately the resurrection). God’s salvation is near, but it comes in unexpected ways. The challenge to disciples of every age is to be vigilant and hopeful, continually anticipating and watching for God to come.

6. What does it mean for you to be vigilant and hopeful?

It’s something we hate to do. It’s something most of us don’t do well but which we all end up doing more than we care to admit. That “something” is “waiting.” Think of the many examples of waiting in our daily lives. We stand in line at the post office, waiting for the next available clerk. The voice on the other end of the phone line says, “Thanks for calling; can you hold, please?” A student in the school hallway runs to catch up with friends, shouting, “Wait for me!” The host at the restaurant tells the hungry customer there will be a twenty-minute wait for a table. We sit in the “waiting room” of the doctor’s office. A child on Santa’s lap tells him, “I can’t wait ‘til Christmas!”

What other examples of waiting come to mind?

Whether we care to admit it in this instant-gratification, drive-thru-window, two-minute-oatmeal, microwaveable, instant-credit-approval society, we are a waiting people. The same can be said of disciples of Jesus; and no other season in the church year is more filled with the theme of waiting than Advent. “Beware; keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come.” (Mark 13:33 NRSV)

It is true, in Advent we anticipate Christmas. We wait and prepare for the promised coming of the child of Bethlehem. For some, this waiting means active preparation and excitement. For some, it means a deep loneliness, missing loved ones, and a reality far different from the tranquil Christmas postcard. We wait and hope for a renewed experience of God-with-us, for a renewed knowledge of Christ’s presence.

How can we support others who find Advent and Christmas to be lonely?

But we also wait and hope for something more. We await release. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in his Letters and Papers from Prison, wrote: “Life in a prison cell reminds me a great deal about Advent – one waits and hopes and patters about, but in the end what we do is of little consequence, for the door is shut, and it can only be opened from the outside.” We acknowledge our yearning for release as we pray, “We confess we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves.” (Evangelical Lutheran Worship, page 95) We wait and hope for release from fear and heartache, from loneliness and grief, from sin and brokenness, from whatever imprisons us and captures our hopes, kills our dreams, and limits our imagination.

What do the words of Bonhoeffer mean to you?
How are we “captive to sin?”

Our “Advent attitude” as disciples of Jesus is one of hopeful waiting. And in our waiting, we hear a word. “The master of the house will come” (Mark 13:35 NSRV). It’s a word spoken by a God who by a simple word created all things. It’s a word of promise from a God we know to be true to God’s word – a word which becomes flesh and dwells among us.

Read Matthew 25:31-46

This text is often referred to as the Last Judgment, describing the end of time when the Son of Man returns. Jesus uses the phrase “Son of Man” to describe himself sitting on the throne with all the angels at the time of judgment. All nations gather before him.

The age-old questions about the second coming of Christ – when? and “what sign?” – are answered in a surprising way: Christ comes now, in the “least.” The poor and the suffering are signs of Christ’s presence.

1. How does Christ connect and identify with those in need?

Jesus uses the image of a shepherd who divides the sheep from the goats. This would have been a commonly understood image. Sheep and goats mingle and graze together in the pastures during the day; but at night, or when the sheep are to be sheared or the goats milked, they are separated. The Great Shepherd is the shepherd for both the sheep and goats and knows them all.

Note that neither those identified in the parable as the sheep nor the goats knew who it was that they were serving (or not serving). They did not act (or fail to act) to earn Jesus’ favor or to gain their salvation. Rather, the faithful lived out their faith daily in the ordinary actions and service to others in need. They are called “blessed” – the word Jesus uses in the Beatitudes to describe the faithful disciple (Matthew 5:1-12). They have an attitude of a servant, reaching out and caring for those in need with the heart of Jesus. They fulfill what Jesus described earlier in Matthew as the great commandment: to love God and to love the neighbor (Matthew 22:37-39). Followers of Jesus of every time and place are to act with the same attitude of servanthood and compassion.

This parable sheds light on the sins of omission – the things we are called to do that we fail to do. It is one thing to admit and confess our sins of commission, naming the wrongs we have done. We can often readily identify and name our sinful actions. But it is a more difficult task to name and identify those things we failed to do – those needs we did not even recognize. This passage shakes us to our core. The world is big; the needs are great.

The parable of the Last Judgment leads directly in Matthew’s Gospel into the account of the passion and death of Jesus. Just as Jesus has identified in the parable with the least and the suffering, so he enters into his own suffering and death.

Small, seemingly insignificant and forgotten deeds done in everyday living are lifted up as service to Jesus himself. The sheep in the parable today were surprised – unaware of the good things they were doing. Their ministry had become a natural response to being a part of Christ’s family, a natural outflowing of life, an internalized faith and lifestyle – so much so that they were unaware of the good works they were doing as they shared God’s love.

Following Jesus means being an every-day disciple, not just one who shows up on Sundays. Instead, the challenge of being a disciple is to live with eyes open, seeing Christ in each person and extending the love of Christ to each.

2. What attitude does Jesus want us to embrace as we encounter others with needs?

3. What does it feel like when someone extends compassion to you?

4. Is it easier to give than to receive acts of kindness?

What needs do you see around you? Look closely, for you just might be surprised at whom you might meet in your neighbor, in the poor in your community, in the imprisoned, the lonely, and the hungry. It just might be the very face of Christ in your midst. Close your eyes and imagine driving home from your congregation. As you imagine driving by buildings, and people, try to identify people who might have special needs. The challenge of the disciple is to extend compassion today, tomorrow and then the next day.

5. How might you get involved in helping others, especially the hungry, thirsty, naked, sick and those imprisoned?

Yet compassion is not the only challenge for disciples. Each day we, as disciples of Jesus, struggle with forgiveness, grace, responsible living, courage, love, stewardship and other issues. Sin yanks at us to go our own way with no regard for anyone but ourselves. Thankfully, we have other Christians to encourage, support, and challenge us. We have God’s Word to ground us in the teachings of Jesus. We have the Spirit to nudge and prod us.

“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’” Matthew 25:21 (NRSV)

Read Matthew 25:14-30

The parable of the talents follows immediately after the parable of the wise and foolish maidens. A talent was the largest monetary unit of the ancient world. One talent was equal to 6,000 denarii. The amount entrusted to the servants is huge, implying a great deal of trust on behalf of the master.

The servants in the parable do not know how long the master will be gone, but they are to be vigilant and faithful until the master returns. The servants will be held accountable for how they use the resources entrusted to them while the master is gone.

1. Were the servants actively working on the master’s behalf, or were they only concerned about their own security?

2. Why would the master trust the servants with so much money?

Note the familiar theme of grace in the parable. All are given the gift of talents; none is left outside the gift of grace. The challenge in this parable (as in all of Matthew) for the disciple is: What will we do with the lavish, generous gifts the master has given?

3. How would you assess the stewardship practices of each of the servants?

4. Should all of the servants been given the same amount of talents?

The first two servants “went off at once” to multiply the gift (vs. 16-17). They trusted in their relationship with the master. They were future-focused, willing to risk for the master’s increase. In contrast, the one-talent servant fearfully focused on the past. “I knew you were a harsh man… so, I was afraid.” He did not trust that his relationship with the master could risk failure. He did not trust his own abilities. His fear immobilized him and led him to hide the gift until the master’s return.

6. How would you describe each of the servants using modern images?

Applying this parable to the church, the message is clear. Do we encourage one another to try to avoid disaster; or do we foster an attitude of trust and faithfulness, of willing risk-taking for the increase of the kingdom? There are some who put the gifts into action. And there are some who, out of fear, doubt, or selfishness, choose to keep it all for themselves and fail to see that the gifts given are intended to be invested on behalf of others. To these is spoken the word of judgment: If you try to keep the gift for yourself alone, you will lose everything.

There was once a village chief who had three sons – each with a special talent. The oldest cared for the olive trees, providing the village olive oil for food and trade. The second son was a shepherd, keeping the herds in good health, providing food and clothing for the village. The third son was a dancer, bringing cheer, beauty, and joy to the village.

One day, the chief had to go on a long journey and left the village in his sons’ care. For awhile, things went well, but then the cold winds began to blow. The olive branches, cracked from the ice, failed to bloom. Soon the villagers had no fuel, and they begged the first son to cut down the trees. He finally relented, for he knew it was foolish to save the trees only to lose the village.

The ice made it impossible to travel, and soon the villagers had nothing to eat. They begged the second son to kill the sheep so they wouldn’t starve. At first he refused; but he finally realized it was foolish to save the sheep only to have the people perish.

The villagers had just enough food and fuel to survive, but the hardships broke their spirits. They lost hope and became desperate. One by one they left the village in search of a better home. The chief finally returned to find smoke from his own chimney alone. Troubled, he rushed into the house, surprising his sons. “What has become of the trees? Where are the sheep? And what has happened to the people?”

The first two sons with sorrow explained what had happened to the trees and the sheep. The father consoled them, “You did your best to save the village. But what has become of the people?” The third son spoke up. “It hardly seemed proper to dance during such suffering. And besides, I wanted to conserve my strength to welcome you.” “Then dance, my son,” the father said, “for my village and my heart is empty.”

But as the third son went to get up, he grimaced and fell. His legs were so stiff from sitting that they were no longer fit for dancing. The father, filled more with sadness than anger said, “Our village could survive with little food and fuel; but it could not without hope.” And they wept.

The parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids is found only in Matthew’s Gospel. The parable is placed in the middle of Jesus’ teaching about the end times (24:1 -- 25:46). Jesus is speaking to his disciples while sitting on the Mount of Olives, looking at the Temple grounds (24:1-3). He has left the temple and the verbal battle with the scribes and Pharisees. The disciples come to Jesus privately (24:3) to ask Jesus about the signs of the end of the age. Jesus uses several analogies to stress the need to live faithfully and expectantly, to watch and remain ready.

The image in this week’s parable of the bridegroom is found in both the Old and New Testaments to describe the covenantal relationship between God and God’s people. (See Hosea 2:14-23; Isaiah 62:5; Revelation 22:17). A typical ritual at a wedding would have the bridegroom coming with his companions to the house of the bride’s parents to take her to his own home. As the groom approaches, the bridesmaids would come out with lighted lamps and meet him.

Note the opening verse of the parable: “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this.” The word “then” and the tense of the verb imply something that will happen in the future. Contrast this with other “kingdom” parables in Matthew (Matthew 13:24, 31, 33, 44, 45, 47) which begin in the present: “The kingdom of heaven is like. . . .” While the parables in Matthew 13 emphasize the mystery of the kingdom already present in the world, the future tense of the parable of the bridesmaids points to a time when the presence of the kingdom will be clearly seen and understood.

The parable begins with grace. At first, all ten bridesmaids, wise or foolish, are equal members of the wedding party. All are to be included in the celebration. Both the foolish and the wise are prepared for the ordinary, usual events. But as in other parables in Matthew, grace calls for a “wise” response.

The challenging question for the church of Matthew’s day (and for the church today) is: How are we to live during the “in-between” time – the time between the inbreaking of the kingdom of heaven in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, and the promised coming of the victorious Christ at the end of the age? Do we trust in One whose presence is not readily seen? The answer Jesus speaks in Matthew’s Gospel is to live a life of active faithfulness, of doing what we believe.

As I was growing up, I couldn’t wait for Christmas. It’s not that I was eager for the gifts under the tree. No, I longed for Christmas because of a promise of the star – not the one over Bethlehem, but rather the promise to be the star of Bethlehem. For the budding thespians of the Sunday school, the coveted role to have in the Christmas play was to be Mary or Joseph.

True, the roles didn’t have any lines to memorize. But a truly gifted actor is able to embody the message through a gesture of a hand, an empathetic glance, a posture expressing love and adoration. And I had the part down pat.

The year finally arrived for my light to shine as Joseph. This was also the year the director was expecting her first child. Her first-born arrived three weeks before Christmas; and the birth inspired her to announce that the baby in the Christmas pageant that year would be a living, breathing infant.

The weeks prior to Christmas were spent in preparation. As the shepherds arrived on stage after their fear-filled encounter with the heavenly host, I was to gently pick up the child, cradle her in my arms with fatherly compassion, and hold her as the shepherds worshipped and adored.

Rehearsals went smoothly; the baby was adorable, a helpful supporting cast member for my acting debut. But the night of the performance was a different story. As I picked up the child, she began to cry. I tried rocking her back and forth as I had seen the director do, but the cries only increased. How could I emote love and compassion holding a screaming baby? The child was stealing my moment to shine! Finally, in desperation, I gave the baby to Mary, who wrapped the blanket (which I had forgotten to pick up with the child) around the cold infant; and of course, the crying stopped.

Afterwards, I was glum and disappointed. My big moment had been upstaged by a crying baby. But many said that they experienced Christ’s coming in a new and meaningful way through that shivering, crying child.

Christ came that night. I was ready, but I wasn’t prepared. I knew the part, but I had forgotten the most important role. I was so busy with my own aspirations that I failed to see the precious gift represented in my arms.

Read Matthew 23:1-12

To understand Matthew 23:1-12, skim through the previous chapter. Matthew 22 is filled with descriptions of religious leaders interrogating Jesus, attempting to entrap him. Finally, Jesus turns to the crowds and his disciples, delivering his own evaluation. It is not favorable. He condemns the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy. They do not practice as they teach.

Jesus urges the crowd to learn from the teachings rather than the actions of the scribes and Pharisees. It seems these teachers have correct information, but have not applied the teachings to their own lives. They are hypocrites. In chapter 23, Jesus gives many examples to support his claim.

1. What does it mean to be a hypocrite?

2. How could the scribes and Pharisees have gone so far astray?

Then, Jesus turns things upside down by proclaiming, “The greatest among you will be your servant” (Matthew 23:11). How can this be? What does Jesus mean by this reversal? Why would someone great choose to become a servant? Jesus adds, “All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12).

These might be idle words if they were not backed by Jesus’ own actions. Unlike the scribes and Pharisees, Jesus practices what he teaches. He becomes a servant to all and sacrifices his life. In the process, Jesus is denied, betrayed and humiliated. It is a humbling journey to the cross. Jesus’ life and sacrificial death becomes a model for his own disciples. He does not just speak about becoming a servant; he becomes that very servant.

3. How did Jesus model a life of humility?

His life and death stand in sharp contrast to the hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees. His life of humble service condemns those whose lives do not reflect what their lips profess.

After the condemnation, Jesus laments over Jerusalem (Matthew 23:37-39). There is no joy in scolding or condemning. To some, his tears might come as a surprise. Yet consider a parent’s profound grief and sorrow when his or her child chooses a path of destruction. Jesus desires to gather and protect his beloved like a hen gathers her brood. The depth of Jesus’ love is revealed. It is a love far beyond those who choose to follow him.

6. What feelings are stirred in you as you hear of Jesus’ lament?

A pastor from the United States was visiting several black churches in South Africa. During the visit, a respected elder in a nearby village died. The pastor wanted to attend and pay respects, so the host changed the planned itinerary in order to attend the funeral.

On the day of the funeral, the host seemed in no hurry to arrive at the funeral on time. In fact, the visiting pastor and host arrived about an hour after the funeral had begun. The pastor’s embarrassment worsened as the pastor was slowly escorted down to the front pew to sit with the other pastors. Not only that, the guest pastor was the only white person in the church. Surely, this conspicuous guest had become a disruptive and negative distraction.

When the funeral was over, the guest pastor was invited to lead the funeral procession out of the church to the grave. Rain was pouring down, yet hundreds went to the graveside service. Afterwards, most people lingered to greet the widow.

Finally, the guest pastor had a chance to meet the grieving widow, fervently apologizing for being so late and for being a distraction. The widow interrupted the pastor’s apology, “No, do not say anything more. Do not apologize. It was our sincere honor to have someone from the United States come to this funeral. My husband would have been so honored. You have taken your time to be here.”

Ultimately, it wasn’t about the pastor. It wasn’t about being late or on time. It wasn’t about rain or sun. It was about a widow who extended humble hospitality to a stranger. Ultimately, it was about brothers and sisters in Christ who shared a moment of grief; but more than that, they shared the glorious promises of the resurrected Christ.

Throughout Matthew 22 Jesus has been challenged and questioned by the Pharisees, Herodians, and Sadducees. In this week’s reading, it is a lawyer who poses the question to entrap Jesus. At first glance, the question seems easy. Which is the greatest of the laws? Keep in mind that there were well over 600 laws at the time. So, which of all the many laws is the greatest? Is it possible to select one law above others?

Jesus sees through the question and answers with profound clarity. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37). Even before the lawyer asks a follow-up question, Jesus clarifies the second greatest commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39).

1. How might the response of Jesus put an end to the debate?

The debate with this lawyer seems to be over. What more can be said? Who can argue about giving God our full attention and extending love to neighbors? In Luke’s Gospel, the lawyer asks one more question, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus expands the definition of neighbor by telling the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). Our neighbor is not only the person who lives next door to us or those people we like. Anyone who is in need is our neighbor and is to be loved.

Jesus links two very old commandments: the love for God (Deuteronomy 6:5) and the love of neighbor (Leviticus 19:18). Love becomes the very hinge upon which the law and the prophets are joined (See Romans 13:9-10). In fact, love sums up everything! But love is more than just a warm fuzzy feeling; it is a commitment of heart, soul and mind.

4. How does love sum up the teachings and life of Jesus?

Loving God becomes a life-long commitment demanding all of who we are. This love is not completed in a day or week; instead, our love for God calls for our full attention every day, every hour. Our love for God overflows us and rushes out toward others.

Jesus’ answer is very simple. The difficulty – for the lawyer then and for disciples now -- is to live constant love.

Love! That’s what it’s all about. We spend our time, money and energy seeking and giving love.

Sometimes we love another person, but other times the focus of our love becomes our job, car, sports team, or exercise schedule. The list goes on.

Jesus interrupts and invites us back to the basics. We are to place our full attention and energy on God. Jesus clearly reminds us, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37 NRSV). This is not just a puppy love or a passing fad. We are to re-order our lives with a love directed toward God alone.

3. What would it mean to re-order our lives so that they are directed fully toward God?

God has created us with a tremendous capacity to love. God’s love in us is not just a warm feeling. It becomes real in our care for others. Jesus instructs us to love others as we love ourselves – not with narcissistic behavior focusing on ourselves alone, but with love overflowing to both friend and stranger.

When we fully love the Lord, we treat others and ourselves with respect. Hopefully, we no longer need hundreds of laws to tell us how to treat others; instead our regard for our neighbor as well as our neighbor’s well-being is motivated by the love in our hearts. We simply cannot love God without living that love in our care for our neighbor (See 1 John 4:20). We cannot profess our love for God, then follow-up by stealing, killing or wounding our neighbor.

Disciples of every age have recognized the challenge of loving. Daily, we fall short. Daily, we confess our shortcomings to God. We have not loved God, ourselves or our neighbor as God desires. Fortunately, God is gracious, forgiving and loving. God hears our prayer and gives us the opportunity to try again to love as God intended.

Read Matthew 22:15-22

It isn’t just Jesus who had disciples. In this passage, we read about the disciples of the Pharisees, the Jewish leaders of the day. Their disciples were committed to studying the “correct” interpretation of the Torah and the Jewish way of life. It is these disciples who are used by the Pharisees to entrap Jesus. Oddly, they are joined by the Herodians, supporters of the Roman-endorsed Herod and the taxes.

1. Can you compare and contrast the disciples of the Pharisees and Jesus?

At first the interrogators appear sincere, flattering Jesus. Then, they question him about the law and the payment of taxes to Rome, the non-Jewish occupier of their land. Answering “yes” or “no” is bound to get Jesus into trouble with someone. Jesus is aware of the malice in their hearts.

2. Why are the Pharisees trying to trap Jesus?

Nevertheless, Jesus offers a classic response: “Give to rulers the things which are the rulers. Give to God the things that are God’s.” Jesus’ answer turns the tables on those who try to trap him. What is not God’s? As the Psalmist says, “The earth is the Lord’s and everything within” (Psalm 24:1). Look around. Is this not God’s world? Are not humans made in the image of God? Wherever humans go, they are God’s. This is true no matter the form of government.

God has created people to live within creation, allowing them to choose to form governments, bring good order to people, and help to provide basic needs. Sometimes these governments are ruled by emperors, councils, or the people themselves. Governments can be good or evil. A government is judged from God’s perspective and can be an expression of goodwill for humanity.

When Jesus looks at the head depicted on the coin, he acknowledges the government of the day. His advice: give the Emperor his coin. Jesus knows God’s rule and throne far exceed any human ruler. Jesus sees the bigger picture, but at the same time, he recognizes the here and now. It is a practical answer. For Jesus to suggest the people not pay taxes would certainly have provoked a riot and rebellion as people tried to usurp the Roman regime.

Thus, Jesus places the question back to the interrogators. Each is to decide the boundary between God and the emperor’s reign. Jesus’ issue is not with the emperor. Instead, he sees the bigger picture, inviting people to follow God. It is God who deserves absolute allegiance.

Find a coin in your pocket or purse. Examine it. Look at both sides of the coin.

Although the faces on our coins today are different, the question asked of Jesus still rings true. Do we, as disciples of Jesus, need to pay taxes? If so, are all taxes justified? Why not withhold taxes and give the same amount to the church? Is it OK to fudge on tax returns and give the government less than the law requires?

Jesus doesn’t give an easy answer. It’s not a clear “yes” or “no.” In no way does Jesus say all taxes are right. Nor does Jesus say taxes are wrong. Likewise, Jesus does not affirm or condemn government. Instead, in a simple formula, Jesus reminds the interrogators, and us as well, to give to God what is God’s – which is everything. This places any government as secondary to God’s rule. Our primary allegiance is to God.

Jesus challenges us to view our government with God’s eye. As disciples of Jesus, we try to be good, honest citizens who uphold laws, respecting the rights of others and working for justice for all. If taxes are not fair and balanced for all the citizens, then we, as Christians, work for change. It’s not an issue of wheeling and dealing for “my” money and “my” investments. It’s all God’s anyway.

The dilemma of the modern-day disciples is to not get caught in the consumer cycle, forgetting Jesus in the process. It’s all God’s. Always has been. Always will be. We seek to be good stewards of our financial resources, generously giving for the work of God’s reign. At the same time, we support our government as it works for peace and justice for all, but raise questions when it does not.

“Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.” Matthew 22:9 (NRSV)

Read Matthew 22:1-14

This parable (or parables) of the wedding banquet immediately follows the parable of the wicked tenants (Matthew 21:33-46). Jesus continues to speak to the religious leaders who want to arrest him (Matthew 21:46).

The parable of the wedding banquet of the king’s son has significant political overtones which can be easily overlooked. Think about it ... It would be imperative for those invited to attend the wedding feast of the king’s son, not only to show respect, gratitude and honor for the invitation, but also as an expression of loyalty to the heir to the throne. To turn down such an invitation would not only be socially rude; it would be politically rebellious (and perhaps even politically suicidal). Allegiance is at stake. Excuses would hardly be acceptable; and unlike the parallel parable in Luke’s Gospel (Luke14:15-24) where a variety of excuses are given, those invited in Matthew’s parable offer none. Instead, they “made light” (the Greek word implies a response of apathy and disregard) of the invitation (vs. 5).

The political rebellion is magnified as the king’s slaves are mistreated and killed by those who were invited to the banquet. In light of such insurrection, the king’s harsh response makes a bit more sense. The gracious invitation of the king to the wedding banquet is then extended to everyone, both good and bad alike (vs.9-10).

The banquet hall is filled. And then the focus of the parable turns to the attire of the wedding guests. Why the concern about dress? There is a scriptural reference to a king providing robes for the invited guests. (See 2 Kings 10:22) In a similar way, many churches provide “proper” robes for choir members, acolytes or assisting ministers. And many times in Paul’s writings, the Christian’s life is described as “putting on” the new life of faith. (See Romans 13:12-14; Galatians 3:27; Ephesians 4:24.) The proper garment would indicate not only a willingness to fully join in the king’s celebration but could also represent “putting on” the Christian life, bearing the proper fruit, and receiving the “garment of salvation” (Isaiah 61:10) from God.

4. If the issue isn’t clothing, what is the point of the parable?

The imagery of the wedding banquet is a common theme in the Old and New Testament; for example, Isaiah speaks of a promised feast of rich foods which God will provide (Isaiah 25:6-9). Revelation 19 describes the final, victorious banquet with the Lamb. Invitation, apathy, rejection, response – all echo in this parable. Clearly for Matthew, the new community of the church was a strange assortment of people. God acted with a marvelous disregard for the old rules of what was acceptable and bestowed grace overflowing.

5. Where do we find ourselves in the parable?

It comes in the mail. It’s usually fairly easy to identify, because unlike other pieces of mail, it’s usually in a heavier, more stately envelope. Often times, there are embossed letters on it, making it appear almost regal. Sometimes the address is written in a fancy script, signifying something important. As you open the envelope, there is often an inner envelope to be opened as well, as if to say that the content of the envelope is so precious, so special, that it must not be creased or stained in its delivery.

Once the envelopes are finally opened, the letters on the parchment, printed in broad, bold strokes, often begin with these or similar words: “The honor of your presence is requested ....” And oftentimes, at the bottom of the invitation are four letters asking for a response: RSVP.

Today’s parable, like the parables before it, is filled with grace and challenge for the follower of Jesus. There is a gracious invitation to everyone to join in the feast of the kingdom. We are invited to the table God has prepared for us. Everyone is included by this loving and gracious God. Everyone ... including those we least expect.

3. Do you believe every person has received an invitation from God? In other words, has everyone heard the good news of God in Jesus Christ?

But any invitation – even one without “RSVP requested” – calls for a response. Will we go? Will we enjoy the company? Who will be there? What shall we wear?

As we open ourselves to receive Christ in our hearts ... as we come willingly to the table, prepared to discard the old clothes of hatred, jealousy, and self-righteousness ... as we quit thinking we have to earn the ticket to the meal but willingly accept the banquet that has been prepared ... we are given a new wardrobe. We are dressed in Christ. We put on compassion, kindness, gentleness, forgiveness, and love.

That is the grace note sounding in the Gospel parable. But along with that note is also sounded the note of judgment. Even as God invites, God also gives us the freedom to respond. We can choose to come or not attend the banquet. RSVP is requested.

Read Matthew 21:33-46

This is the third parable in Matthew 20-21 in which Jesus uses the imagery of the vineyard. This parable closely parallels the Song of the Vineyard found in Isaiah 5:1-7. It would be helpful to read this Old Testament song to note the similarities. The religious leaders to whom Jesus tells the parable would no doubt have been familiar with the passage from Isaiah.

The characters in the Isaiah’s story are clearly identified. God is the owner of the vineyard who lovingly and carefully digs up the soil, clears it of stones, and plants the best vines. A watchtower is made to protect the vineyard, and a wine vat is constructed for the harvest. The vineyard is Israel; Judah is the planting. But despite the owner’s loving care, only wild grapes are found.

2. Have you ever worked on a project with disappointing results? How does it feel?

Likewise, in the parable of the wicked tenants, the same kind of loving care is depicted in the landowner’s actions. The vineyard is entrusted to tenants who refuse the owner the harvest, abuse the owner’s servants, and kill the owner’s son.

3. What are some possible reasons why the tenants didn’t treat the heir better?

This leads to the pronouncement of judgment and rejection. The original tenants who confuse ownership with stewardship are replaced by another people (Greek word ethno) who will yield fruits of the kingdom (vs. 43) at the harvest time.

4. How did the chief priests and the Pharisees respond to this parable?

5. How is this parable a picture of or allegory of the history of salvation?

There are several points to note. Both the heir and Jesus are killed outside the walls. Also, note the Greek word for “time” is not chronos (chronological time, e.g., “What time is it?”) but kairos (the fullness of time, e.g., an expectant mother saying to the soon-to-be-a-father, “It’s time!”)

This parable has been interpreted to give the early church its legitimacy as the “new tenants” of the vineyard. But its message and its challenge speak to the church of every age. God lovingly, graciously calls us into the vineyard. God plants and equips the vineyard – the church – and then entrusts it to our stewardship. God’s intention is a full, rich harvest of the fruits. The harvest time will come. The question – and the challenge – for us is: “Will we have the courage to be faithful stewards, bearing fruit?”

A church was once established – a beautiful, warm church with wonderful facilities to praise its Founder and serve its neighbors. It was blessed with energetic, gifted members who enjoyed one another’s fellowship.

But the Founder went away, and the purpose for its founding was forgotten. The members didn’t always remember the source of their gifts and the calling to be good stewards of the many blessings they had been given. In their forgetfulness, in small acts of faithlessness and neglect, the mission and calling of the Founder was lost.

So, what do you think the Founder will do?

The Founder will see that the mission and calling is fulfilled. The Founder will raise up faithful members who will bear good fruit. And to all the members – the faithful and the faithless – the Founder will send the gift of the Heir, the Son.

Each time the members gather together, they will remember and recall the gift. They will remember how, even in the midst of betrayal and faithlessness, the Heir took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, given for you.” The cup will be raised, and they will hear once again the words of the Heir, “This cup is the new covenant between the Founder and the church, given for you – even for you, the faithless tenants - for the forgiveness of sin.”

Each time they eat of the bread and drink from the cup, they proclaim the Good News of the Founder’s gift of the Heir until he comes again. And until the Heir comes, The Founder will continue to care for the members, feed them, and send the Holy Spirit to call and find the members when they get lost.

We who have been blessed with the gift of the Founder’s love are empowered with the gift of the Heir’s life and guided by the gift of the Spirit’s calling.

Read Matthew 21:23-32

Power and authority are key issues in the context of this week’s reading. Between this week’s lesson and last week’s parable of the laborers in the vineyard, Matthew describes a gathering storm of controversy over Jesus’ authority. Jesus foretells his death and resurrection (20:17-19), only to have the mother of the disciples James and John ask for her sons to be in a position of authority in Jesus’ kingdom. (Matthew 20:20-28) Jesus enters in triumph into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and promptly overturns the tables of the money-changers in the temple. (Matthew 21:1-7)

The multitudes are following Jesus; after all, he reaches out to the outcasts and sinners. The religious leaders are threatened and question his authority. They confront Jesus in the temple. Their weapons are barbed questions; Jesus responds with the parable of the two sons. (Matthew 21:28-32)

1. What word of challenge and judgment is in this parable?

2. Count the number of times the word “authority” is used in this passage. What is at stake over the issue of authority?

Once again, the setting of the parable is the vineyard – the place where the landowner offered free, unmerited grace in the previous parable. (Matthew 20:1-16) Now the hearer is challenged with the implications of this grace. Such grace leads to changed minds and hearts – repentance. This change is seen in the first son, who at first refuses the invitation and call to work in the vineyard, but later experiences a change of heart and goes to work. He experiences a change of mind that leads to a change of life. In contrast is the second son, who initially says, “Yes,” to his father’s invitation but then fails to respond.

Grace is amazing – and challenging. It is amazing in its breadth – the outcast, the sinner, the least expected are all included. And it challenges the usual, expected, acceptable order. It offers the freedom to change and be changed. And it calls forth trust and belief.

The first son experiences the grace to turn back from his first word and offer the “yes” of faith. The second son knows the right words to say but fails to put the words into practice. The tax collectors and the prostitutes seem at first glance to say “no” to God; but their hearts are open to God’s message and messenger. In contrast, the religious leaders and scribes appear to be obedient – to say “yes” to God; but they have failed to be open to God’s life-changing grace.

Imagine picking up the morning paper and discovering that you had died the day before! That happened years ago as a newspaper erroneously reported the death of a famous man. The error gave the man the interesting opportunity to read what people would say about him after he had died.

So he began to read. He read past the bold caption that said, “Dynamite king dies,” to the text itself. He was taken aback to find that he was described as “a merchant of death,” for he was the inventor of dynamite and had amassed a great fortune from it.

The description in the newspaper sparked a change. Did he really want to be remembered this way? In that moment, he experienced a healing power greater than the destructive force of dynamite. He changed his life direction and devoted his energy and money to works of peace and human betterment. Today, he is best remembered as the founder of the Nobel Peace Prize – Alfred Nobel – all because he had the grace-filled experience to see himself as others saw him and the freedom to set his life in a different direction.

Grace leads to a change of heart – to repentance, which is an awesome and sometimes terrifying gift. Repentance forces us to look at ourselves honestly and acknowledge our failings, our times of saying, “yes” and then not doing anything, or our times of saying “no” when we should have said, “yes.”

4. Give an example in your own life when you said no, but later changed your mind.

5. Which person would you rather work beside: the one who says no, but comes through or the one who says yes, but doesn’t show up?

6. How can we develop the quality of our “yes” meaning “yes?”

But repentance is also a grace-filled gift because it leads us back to the grace of God, where we are reminded that we are not ultimately bound by our past actions and by what we have done, but by what God in Christ has done for us. The question becomes, “What do we do with such unbridled grace – grace that both judges and forgives, grace that includes both those inside the religiously acceptable circle as well as those who are seemingly on the outside?” This is the challenge for the Christian disciple.

“[The landowner said], ‘Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’” Matthew 20:15 (NRSV)

Read Matthew 20:1-16

1. What are the surprises in this parable?

The whole issue here is fairness. The owner and the workers had an agreement (Greek word symphoneo). The first workers were to be paid what was fair—a day’s wage (a denarius). The owner promises to pay the others hired “whatever is right” (20:4). To the surprise of all, they are also paid a denarius.

Is this fair? The first hired don’t think so. The owner responds to their complaint: “Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?” (A more literal translation would be, “Or is your eye evil because I am good?” 20:15)

The generosity of the landowner goes against what is seen to be fair. Similarly, God insists on acting out of grace. Fair or not, God gives all things freely. The words beginning and ending this parable challenge disciples of every age. In God’s kingdom, “the last will be first, and the first … last.” (19:30, 20:16)

4. Is God “fair” in God’s generosity?

5. If God was fair and gave each person what he or she deserved, what would that mean for you?

The Greek word for “friend” used in the parable (20:13) is only used three times in the New Testament – all in the Gospel of Matthew. In the parable of the wedding banquet (Matthew 22:1-14), the king uses this word to address the man without the proper wedding garment. The other occurrence is found in the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus addresses Judas as he betrays him (Matthew 26:50). In all three, the word suggests a relationship in which the hearer has very nearly offended or scorned the speaker. (Translating the word, “Look, pal,” might more aptly convey the tone of the word.)

As the first laborers grumble about the unfairness of their employer, the landowner reminds them, “Look, pal, I agreed to pay you a denarius, and that’s what you were paid.” The challenge for the workers who endured the day’s labor is the owner’s seemingly unfair generosity.

Jesus begins this parable, “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner. . .” Take a moment to ponder the kingdom of heaven.

The following is a true story. A campus pastor was teaching a college course on the life and teachings of Jesus. As the date for the final exam approached, the class spent several hours reviewing the material. Some students requested extra individualized time with the pastor. Other students met in peer study groups, cramming for the test. One student, realizing she had to be gone the day of the exam, arranged for a make-up exam, only to be told that the make-up test would be much more difficult.

The day of the exam arrived; students sleepily filed into the room, obviously tired from a night of little sleep and lots of study. The campus pastor walked in, looking very serious. “Before we begin, I would like to read a passage from the Gospel of Matthew.” The parable of the laborers in the vineyard was read. The pastor closed the Bible and said, “This reading says that it’s all a gift – it’s all grace. So you’ve all made an A on your exam, and you’re free to go.”

The students sat, stunned, for a moment; and then something unexpected began to happen. A murmur arose from the class – a murmur of discontent. “You mean we studied all this time for nothing, and those who didn’t study or even show up today get an A too? You’ve got to be kidding! It’s just not fair!”

Our whole working lives are based on an agreement that offers fair wage—we do something in order to get something. In the world of work there is no such thing as a free lunch.

It’s no wonder we struggle with God’s grace. Without counting the cost, God continues to give unmerited love. There is something inherently unfair in the whole idea of grace. Is it fair that, “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us?” Is it fair that the gift is for all of us, active members, attending every workday at the church, every worship service, and also for those of us who may be inactive members, seekers, or “back-sliders?” Remarkably--for us, for all of us, “God so loved the world....”

It’s just not fair, this grace upon grace. It’s just not fair, and thank God it’s not!
